Blue Coast specializes in engineering design of shoreline and coastal restoration projects, including soft shoreline solutions. We are experts in restoration of mixed sand and gravel beaches, which are characteristic of the Puget Sound region.
Blue Coast also conducts sea level rise vulnerability and coastal resiliency studies for our clients and incorporate these concepts, as well as adaptive management strategies, into our restoration design projects.
Our staff serve as volunteers on several technical committees and advisory boards related to conservation of the marine environment and sea level rise planning.

Blue Coast was the prime consultant selected to develop alternatives for armor removal and shoreline restoration at Hoypus Point (Deception Pass State Park) and Possession Point State Park. The initial phase of the project identified opportunities and constraints at both locations and focused on restoration alternatives at Hoypus Point and involved significant collaboration with the stakeholder, primarily Washington State Parks, the property owner at both study locations. Aspect Consulting provided geotechnical engineering support and Waterfront Environmental provided design of park elements and beach access for the final design of the project at Hoypus Point. As the prime consultant, Blue Coast worked within tight budgets to complete design and lead construction oversight activities, which was completed Fall 2022.

Blue Coast was the prime consultant, with support from Aspect Consulting for geotechnical reconnaissance for design of bulkhead removal and restoration for an Olympia-area property in Zangle Cove. The project site consists of a 135-foot-long gabion rock wall bulkhead, a 23-foot-long fragmented tire bulkhead, and related debris along the toe of the bluff. Blue Coast completed an alternatives analysis, design for the preferred alternative, permitting support, construction bid documents, and construction oversight. The design recommended invasive vegetation removal and replanting, onsite reuse of the rounded beach materials from the gabion baskets and materials behind as beach nourishment material, a cost effective and creative design approach. A retractable aluminum beach access system was designed collaboratively with the client and a manufacturer. Construction was completed in July 2023.

Blue Coast provided coastal engineering design services and permitting support for the restoration of the beach at Ediz Hook in the vicinity of the former Icicle Seafoods lay down area. The proposed restoration involves the removal of 0.4 acres of fill in aquatic tidelands and nourishment of the beach with suitable sand and gravel graded to a low-sloping beach consistent with the surrounding shoreline. Provided input on coastal engineering design, including grading plan and material specification for the nourishment component of the design.
