Nearshore and Oceanographic Data Collection and Analysis

Blue Coast staff have over three decades of experience in data collection for research and engineering projects in Puget Sound and worldwide. Our expertise includes the measurement of wind, currents, waves, vessel wakes, currents and water quality, sediment transport, topography, and bathymetry. We have developed and implemented measurement and monitoring programs for a wide array of applications.

Examples of instrumentation and data collection services include:

  • Acoustic doppler current meters (ADCPs), either stationary or mounted to global positioning system (GPS) equipped boats
  • Acoustic Doppler velocimeters (ADV)
  • Pulse Coherent Acoustic Doppler Profiler (PC-ADP)
  • Use of wave buoys, ADCPs, and high-resolution pressure loggers to measure directional and non-directional waves.
  • TRDI RiverRay ADCP, which can be used to measure volume or discharge in estuaries and rivers.
  • Nortek AWAC with AST surface tracking or RBR pressure loggers for vessel wake data collection

Project Examples

Rich Passage Passenger-Only Fast Ferry Wave Energy Evaluation Study

Rich Passage Passenger-Only Fast Ferry Wave Energy Evaluation Study

Blue Coast staff managed and led the research program to determine shore impacts from passenger-only fast ferries operating between Seattle and Bremerton. Blue Coast collected wake data for all three vessel on the route and provide additional data collection as needed to support continued vessel operation.

Blue Coast conducted a coastal engineering assessment in support of the feasibility and design of beach restoration alternatives at Lone Tree Lagoon near La Conner, Washington. The work included field data collection and analysis of 3 months of wind-wave data at three locations and collection of information on tidal currents using an acoustic doppler current profiler (ADCP). The site characterization was used to develop conceptual restoration alternatives and recommendations for the site.

Lower Quilcene Restoration Feasibility

Lower Quilcene Restoration Feasibility

Blue Coast supported Anchor QEA on a restoration project on the lower Big Quilcene River. Blue Coast provided hydrodynamic modeling to support design for a restoration design that included a bridge, channel, levee, and channel reconfiguration. Data collection of currents, topography, bathymetry, and water levels supported the modeling effort.
